Rockingham County TDA Receives State Grant for Bike Guide -

Wentworth, N.C.—The Rockingham County Partnership for Economic & Tourism Development (www.ncnorthstar.com) and Tourism Development Authority (TDA) has been awarded a $5,900 grant from the State Division of Tourism, Film, and Sports Development for production of a Rockingham County bike route brochure.
The grant is part of the Division’s annual Tourism Matching Funds grant program. The Rockingham County bike guide was one of 24 projects that were funded out of 57 that applied. The TDA must provide a match of $1,475 for the project. Last year, the Partnership and TDA received a $6,000 grant from the Division for the development of its new Web site.
“The bike guide is part of our trails development in Rockingham County,” said Robin Yount, vice president of Tourism for the Partnership. “We have six designated bike routes in this county that offer great scenery and lots of challenging terrain. The guide will be designed with an easy-to-read map of all the routes and highlight attractions along each route. It’s another way for us to build our attractions in outdoor recreation while also capitalizing on the wonderful natural resources we have here.”
“One unique attribute to our bike routes is the Rockingham Century Challenge, a 100-mile challenge that was designed by local cyclist, Billy Vestal,” she said. “Also, all our routes will connect with the state routes in other counties so that cycling enthusiasts can cross the entire state if they want.”
Earlier this fall, the Partnership and TDA conducted a photo shoot for the guide that included landmarks around the county that can be seen from some of the bike routes. That photography also features local cycling enthusiasts who volunteered as models for the guide.
Production of the Rockingham County Bike Guide should be complete by the end of this year.
