A Museum for Eden - 9-5-2007

Hallelujah! was the response of the Eden Preservation Society when Jean and Tommy Harrington offered a historic storefront location on Washington Street for use as a museum. Members eagerly accepted the offer at their August meeting. The building is to be rent free, but the Society will be responsible for ongoing expenses such as utilities.

Long known as Robert’s Café, the structure was built in 1885 and is distinguished by its handsome brickwork and the bracketed frame cornice over the front. It has been home to a Coca-Cola distributorship and several other businesses in its long history, and is a contributing property in the Leaksville Commercial National Register District.

Pat and Melissa Whitten, Ralph and Julie Ganis , and Jean Harrington are among those working on cleaning and painting the premises. Anyone wishing to help with donations for paint or for the anticipated ongoing expenses is urged to contact Melissa or Pat at 623-6393.

Melissa says “Please help us to make this happen so that we can preserve our past for generations to come.”

Ralph and Julie Ganis , who only recently moved to Eden, started a museum in Waxhaw, S.C., and their experience is expected to be especially helpful in this venture.

For further information, call 623-6393 or 623-3128.
