Dinner & History program on Blackbeard's Ship, the Queen Anne's Revenge
On Thursday, September 17, at 6 p.m., the Museum & Archives of Rockingham County (MARC) will present a Dinner and History program by Dr. Lindley Butler, titled “Blackbeard’s Mischief: A Continuing Story.”

Dr. Butler, professor emeritus of Rockingham Community College, scuba diver and historian of the Queen Anne’s Revenge Shipwreck Project, will cover the discovery and identification of the 1718 wreck and the archaeological finds of 20 years of excavation and research. In addition, he will describe the background of the $8 million lawsuit recently filed by the treasure hunters against the state.

Asked why there has been so much controversy around Queen Anne’s Revenge, Dr. Butler replied, “That’s what happens when you disturb pirates—especially Blackbeard, ‘the fiercest pirate of them all.’”

Blackbeard’s identity has remained a mystery for three centuries—that is, until 2015 when a North Carolina researcher revealed the real Blackbeard. The announcement of his findings is yet to be made public.

A new Queen Anne’s Revenge exhibit at the MARC will accompany this program.

The program is at the museum, located in the former Rockingham County courthouse, 1065 N.C. Highway 65 in Wentworth.

Tickets for Dinner and History are available at the MARC, www.TheMARConline.org, or 336-634-4949. Reservations for the 6 p.m. catered dinner must be made by Sept. 11 at a cost of $15 per person, $12.50 for senior citizens and children 12 and under. For the program only, which will begin at 7 p.m., the cost is $5 for nonmembers. Members of MARC may attend the program free of charge.
