Centennial Celebration at Mayo River State Park
9:00am – 5:00pm
Come out to Mayo River State Park’s Mayo Mountain Access to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the North Carolina State Park System! We are planning an all-day affair starting with a fishing derby in the park’s ponds. We will have a special stocking of catfish just for the event provided by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission. This will be a license-exempt fishing derby for participants of all ages. During the day we will host a reunion for folks who spent earlier years here at the park when it was operated by Washington Mills. There will also be displays depicting the history of the park as well as the history of other state parks across N.C. We intend to offer educational exhibits and displays and hope to have park planners and administrators here who may be able to discuss visions and plans for our state parks as we start our next century of managing North Carolina’s most significant and wonderful natural features. We may also host a volunteer river clean-up/paddling excursion, have bluegrass music, and enjoy a dinner in the evening under the old shelter. Many of our plans are still being formulated, so some of the particulars may change, but one thing is sure--You can come out to the Mayo Mountain Access at Mayo River State Park on Saturday Oct 8 to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of N.C. State Parks! This announcement will be updated as plans become more refined. If you have any questions, would like to participate in the reunion or have memorabilia related to the park to share, or just need more information about the park, please call us at (336) 427-2530.
