Rockingham County Selected as STAR Community
Wentworth, N.C. (September 24, 2012) – The Rockingham County Business & Technology Center (RCBTC) today announces Rockingham County’s selection among 25 cities and counties nationwide to participate in the STAR Pilot Community Program. The STAR (Sustainability Tools for Assessing & Rating) Community IndexTM will provide Rockingham County an opportunity to be among the first communities in the nation to use the nation’s first framework for holistically evaluating the economic, social and environmental dimensions of communities. Other communities accepted into the STAR Pilot Community Program include Atlanta, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Seattle, Santa Fe, N.M., DeKalb County, Ga., Broward County, Fla. and Tucson, Ariz., among others.
In 2011, the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC-Chapel Hill conducted a study to determine the competitiveness of Rockingham County. That report concluded a need for Rockingham County to become a more sustainable community, which several area organizations are working towards. Mark Wells, Executive Director of the RCBTC stated, “This tool will give Rockingham County a way to measure its progress toward becoming a more sustainable community while also providing citizens more transparency into the effectiveness of its efforts.”
The STAR Pilot Community Program will begin in October, will last one year and will include access to prototype tools, calculators and geospatial applications. It will also comprise dedicated program and technical support from the STAR Communities Team and regular peer networking with participating communities to share experiences and build best practices. More information on the STAR Pilot Community Program can be found at www.starcommunities.org.
About the Rockingham County Business & Technology Center:
The RCBTC is designed to create an entrepreneur-focused, technology-enabled, future-driven environment in Rockingham County. The Center helps entrepreneurs learn how to plan, start and grow businesses, while making sure they understand how to use technology to be competitive in today’s global marketplace. MARC Comes to Life With Halloween Event
Wentworth, NC--On Saturday, October 27, the Museum and Archives of Rockingham County (MARC) will come to life for an afternoon of Halloween family fun with showings of the Ben Stiller film "Night at the Museum".
Two sessions, at 1:00 and 5:00 pm, will be held on the second floor Superior Courtroom at the MARC at 1086 NC Highway 65 in Wentworth. Tickets are $3 per person or $15 per family.
In addition to the film, children will enjoy ghost stories told by local entertainers. They will also receive assorted Halloween snack bags. After the film, participants will create ghosts and other craft projects. Those who wish will also take part in a Halloween costume contest.
MARC Director Kim Proctor emphasized the family friendly nature of the event. "We want folks to have a place where their children can enjoy a variety of activities in a safe environment," she explained.
She also noted the reason behind holding two sessions. "Those with younger children may want to participate in the afternoon session," she noted, "and those older kids may want to come out later in the day." Each session will last approximately three hours.

Other than the 27th, the MARC will be closed while new exhibits are added. It will reopen on November 16 and folks are encouraged to come and visit with family over the upcoming holidays. A Christmas Tour is currently in the works for early December.Posted By: Reidsville Downtown |

Public Meetings Announced for Rockingham Pathways Plan
THIS MAY BE YOUR LAST CHANCE TO HAVE INPUT ON THE ROCKINGHAM PATHWAYS PLAN!
Rockingham County, NC--Proximity to trails is the #1 community amenity sought by prospective homeowners (National Association of Homebuilders Survey, 2008) and has been shown to draw employers to an area. In addition to economic growth, trails provide valuable recreational opportunities and may help reduce the obesity epidemic facing the County. Thirty-Three (33%) of Rockingham County adults are obese compared with 29% for North Carolina (CDC, 2011 and CountyHealthRankings.org). Whether you would like a trail in your neighborhood to improve your land value or reduce health issues we want your opinion reflected in the future of Rockingham County.
Join us at a public meeting near you to provide input on the draft of the Rockingham Pathways Plan and learn more about implementing trails near you. The Rockingham Pathways plan is an effort by trail advocates and local governments to improve economic viability, protect open spaces, and improve the health of citizens. The trails are being developed through public private partnerships based on the belief that the first step to conservation is appreciation and the first step of economic growth is improving quality of life for residents.
The times to review the plan and voice your ideas and concerns are:
- November 5th Western Rockingham, 5-7pm at the Madison-Mayodan Recreation Center, 300 S. Second Avenue Mayodan, NC
- November 8th Reidsville, 6-8pm at City Hall, 230 W. Morehead Street Reidsville, NC
- November 13th Eden, 5-7pm at City Hall, 308 E. Stadium Drive Eden, NC

NC Named America's "Top Business Climate"
Rockingham County, NC--Governor Bev Perdue announced today that North Carolina ranked as the nation's "Top Business Climate," according to Site Selection magazine. It is the tenth time in the last 12 years the state has taken the top honor in the annual ranking by Site Selection, one of the nation's premier economic development magazines.
"North Carolina is a great place to do business and a place where companies and their employees can thrive," said Perdue. "We have a long history of making critical investments in education and customized training programs to build the workforce of tomorrow. We have a low cost of doing business, we encourage innovation. Secretary Crisco and I and our regional, county and city partners have been very aggressive on recruiting companies to North Carolina and growing North Carolina's home grown small businesses."
Over the past year, executives from some of the world's most respected corporations that chose to locate or expand in North Carolina identified the state's wealth of talented and skilled labor, the outstanding custom training programs, a solid transportation infrastructure, the low cost of doing business and a high quality of life as competitive advantages found in North Carolina.
"All states face economic and budgetary challenges these days, but this ranking reminds us that there are significant success stories, too," says Site Selection Editor in Chief Mark Arend. "North Carolina's first-place finish underscores its success across a wide spectrum of industries, from aerospace to life sciences to energy. We commend the governor and her economic development team for their focus on making and keeping their state business-friendly."
Site Selection magazine's annual "Top Business Climate" rankings are based on quantitative and qualitative factors that corporate site-seekers – those who help companies expand or relocate – say they consider most important.
Fifty percent of the ranking comes from a survey of corporate site selection executives who ranked North Carolina No. 2, and 50 percent of the ranking is based on five criteria – three that require states to demonstrate a strong record of attracting capital investment and the other two criteria are the Tax Foundation and KPMG's Location Matters analysis of state tax burdens on mature firms and new firms.
The article about North Carolina's No. 1 ranking can be found at: www.siteselection.com.
Rockingham County companies that have benefited from North Carolina's great business climate and been able to expand local operations within the last year include Global Textile Alliance, Inc., Piedmont Distillers, Henniges Automotive, and Weil-McLain.

City of Reidsville Launches New Website
Rockingham County, NC-- The City of Reidsville has launched a new, revamped website that features news, video, slide shows, calendar of events and much more and is one of the latest efforts to “showcase” Reidsville. It also points visitors to the City’s Facebook page.
According to City Manager Michael J. Pearce, “The new website gives us an opportunity to provide more information and services not only to our residents but also to people doing business in our City, along with visitors to our area. It also allows the individual departments in the City to expand more on their offerings.
“For example you can now visit the documents center and download codes, licenses, sign permits, signup forms for events, sports and more,” he explained. “We are constantly striving to serve our residents and customers more quickly and more efficiently, and this is just another avenue to accomplish this goal.”
The website gives each City department more flexibility on the pages for their departments. It also allows for the community and visitors to have a better understanding of the departmental functions. Visitors to the site can see a master calendar of City-sponsored events and meetings. When you click onto the event, it then takes you to more detailed information. You can sign up for CodeRED notifications or opt out from the site.
One of the highlighted features of the new site is its slideshows. This is a marketing tool for the City and City-owned facilities. The Penn House, for example, can now showcase what a wedding or event looks like at the venue. Moving from one section of the site to another is quite simple. The format is easy to follow and user friendly. With any new site there are still some glitches that have to worked out, so please let us know if you have any problems navigating through the site by contacting the webmaster at astadler@ci.reidsville.nc.us.

The company plans to create 21 jobs and invest nearly $650,000 over three years. The project was made possible in part by a $70,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.
“My first priority is creating jobs,” said Gov. Perdue. “Companies come to North Carolina because of our top-ranked business climate, historic investments in education and job training programs.”
Kalo Foods was created in 2011 to develop and market a unique line of gourmet gluten-free products and mixes. The company was founded by Michael Cusato, a service-disabled veteran of the U.S. Air Force, and Gerald Cusato, a U.S. Army veteran. Kalo’s products, which include artisan pizzas and pie crusts, cookies, brownies, and mixes, are sold under the Geralbaldi and Kalo brands. The company plans to sell these items in the Triad area market as well as through its Internet website.
Salaries will vary by job function, but the average annual wage for the new jobs will be $33,524. The Rockingham County average annual wage is $31,148.
“The decision to base our new gluten-free commercial bakery in North Carolina was made based on the pro-business attitude and business incentives offered by the state and Rockingham County,” said Michael Cusato, president of Kalo Foods. “We look forward to working with our new county and state partners who have helped make our decision possible. Our success will be North Carolina’s success.”
The One NC Fund provides financial assistance, through local governments, to attract business projects that will stimulate economic activity and create new jobs in the state. Companies receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment performance standards to qualify for grant funds. These grants also require and are contingent upon local matches.
North Carolina continues to have a top-ranked business climate. Through Gov. Perdue’s JobsNOW initiative, the state works aggressively to create jobs, train and retrain its workforce, and lay the foundation for a strong and sustainable economic future.
Through use of the One NC Fund, more than 60,000 jobs and $11 billion in investments have been created since 2001. Other partners that helped with this project include: the N.C. Department of Commerce, N.C. Community Colleges, Rockingham County, N.C. Rural Economic Development Center, Town of Stokesdale and the Rockingham County Partnership for Tourism and Economic Development.

Man's Misfortune Turns Into Lifesaver
-From WFMY News 2/Digtriad.com
Rockingham County, NC -- What happens when something bad, leads you to the right place at the right time? If you're Thurman Smith of Reidsville, you take the opportunity and run as far as you can and start a business.
Smith knew he always wanted to work with cars.
"I was determined," about his dream of becoming a business man.
But in 2007, he was stuck in a low paying job with two kids at home.
"It was just hard to make a living," he said.
On one extremely hot and humid Carolina summer day, he was on his way for the first day of a class at Rockingham Community College.
"I was actually driving down the road and my car broke down," Smith recalled.
Hot, tired, lost and with no car, Smith started walking.
"It was like a mile, a mile and a half," he said, in the wrong direction.
"A gentleman walked through the doors, sweaty, in some work clothes looking for a class at Rockingham Community College," said Mark Wells, director at the Rockingham County Business and Technology Center (RCBTC).
Smith never made it to his class at RCC. Instead, the walk led him to Wells.
"This gentleman was having a bad day!" the center director said.
On a whim, he decided to give Smith a ride home.
"The opportunity to help those in need is always there. And if we take those opportunities you never know what you might uncover," Wells said introspectively. "I believe God made him go the wrong way that day."
What he uncovered was Smith's passion to open an auto-repair business. RCBTC had mentors just for that and Wells made it happen.
"They gave me some guidance on some stuff that I needed to do," said Smith.
A year later a man once down on his luck opened the business he once dreamed of.
He now employs five people.
Smith says he still can't believe how what seemed like misfortune, has turned his entire life around.
"From this story, he provided hope, hope to those who might have the potential or the idea of starting a business," Smith said.

Forbes Ranks NC No. 4 in Best States for Business
Forbes Once Again Ranks North Carolina one of the Best States for Business
State Ranks No. 4 in overall rankings; Ranks No. 2 in Best Business Costs
For the third year running, North Carolina has ranked in the top 4 states on the influential Forbes’ Best States for Business list, published today (December 12, 2012). In the full report on Best States for Business and Careers, North Carolina earned an overall ranking of No. 4, also ranking especially high on the following sub-factors that contribute to the overall rankings:
•No. 2 Best Business Costs
•No. 3 Best Regulatory Environment
•No. 3 Best Labor Supply
Governor Bev Perdue’s top priority is creating jobs. Over the course of her term, the Governor has been committed to promoting the expansion of companies within the state, while also working with companies seeking to locate in North Carolina. The Governor’s JobsNOW program is a resource for individuals looking for employment or career change. It also provides information about expanding or creating a business in North Carolina.
North Carolina’s Gross State Product is ranked ninth in the nation at $424.9 billion.
In addition, North Carolina’s workforce is 36 percent more productive than the national average, based on research conducted by N.C. State economist Dr. Michael Walden.
Forbes’ rankings this year measured six vital categories for businesses: costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, current economic climate, growth prospects and quality of life. The publication factored in 35 points of data to determine the ranks in the six main areas. Regarding North Carolina, Forbes' story made particular note of the state's labor costs that run 19% below the national average—third lowest in the country.

Rockingham County TDA Approves New Strategy and Marketing Plan
Wentworth, N.C. — At its January Board meeting, the Rockingham County Tourism Development Authority (TDA) took action on several new business agenda items.
The TDA Board members voted to support the new, proposed Economic Development Strategy that was a result of the Johnson/Parnell report from 2012. The proposal for the new strategy consolidates the efforts of Economic Development, Tourism Development and the Business Technology Center.
In other action, the TDA also committed funds towards producing a new issue of Our Town magazine. The TDA will share the cost of production on this project with the Partnership for Economic and Tourism Development. Production of the new issue of Our Town will begin in the next two months.
Finally, the TDA adopted a new, three-year marketing plan that will begin in July. Objectives of the new plan focus on building and strengthening Rockingham County’s outdoor recreation brand; capturing more overnight, leisure travelers; working with other County leaders to enhance existing tourism attractions and developing new ones; collaborating with Economic Development officials to recruit tourism-related businesses and industries; creating local pride; and supporting the efforts of the cities and towns in their tourism development initiatives.
The new marketing plan includes specific strategies and tactics for accomplishing those objectives. Examples of tactics in the plan include print advertising, online advertising, social media, public relations, speaking engagements and new collateral development. The plan also suggests establishing a Rockingham County Sports Commission that will work to attract large sporting/recreation events to the County.
In order to entice more leisure travelers to spend the night in local hotels, the new plan includes collaborative tactics to enhance existing tourism attractions and potentially develop new ones. It also suggests creating a plan to encourage entrepreneurs to start tourism-related businesses in Rockingham County as well as targeting larger companies in tourism-related industries as part of economic development.
The plan includes specific goals to be attained each year such as increasing occupancy tax revenue and the percentage of leisure travelers in local hotels. It also includes a list of measurement tactics so the TDA can track the effectiveness of its efforts. Posted By: Reidsville Downtown |

The guide also features an updated map of the county’s four rivers: the Dan, the Mayo, the Smith and the Haw.
The Rivers Guide is a four panel brochure with a large, fold-out map. New features of the guide include photography that focuses more on people enjoying the rivers. The content has been expanded to include information about the Smith and the Haw Rivers as well as the Mayo River State Park and the Haw River State Park. Additions to the map include new accesses on the Dan and Smith, local outfitters, new points of interest, and accesses in Virginia that connect with Rockingham County river trips.
“We are trying to make emotional connections with potential visitors in all our marketing and really wanted this new Rivers Guide to show people having fun on our rivers. We feel like our new photography conveys the wide range of emotions one can experience on Rockingham County’s rivers—from fun, to serenity, to thrills,” said Yount.
Yount added, “Our local rivers remain a key attraction for leisure travelers in Rockingham County. Currently most of the visitors drawn here by the rivers are day travelers. In our new three-year marketing plan we will be working with local hotels, outfitters and community leaders to identify new strategies for turning those day visitors into overnight visitors. We will also be looking at other ways we can improve river and outdoor recreation in Rockingham County.”
The Rockingham County Rivers Guide was a project of the Rockingham County TDA and designed by King’s English, LLC. The TDA extends a special thank you to Three Rivers Outfitters and the Dan River Basin Association for their assistance on the Rivers Guide.
Distribution of the Rockingham County Rivers Guide will begin this week. Copies of the guide will be available throughout Rockingham County in local governmental offices, Chambers of Commerce, hotels, shops and businesses. To receive copies and get more information, contact the Rockingham County Partnership for Economic and Tourism Development office at 336.342.8138.

RCC Develops Beer Brewing Program
The art, science and job prospects of brewing beer
By Tabitha Whissemore, Published February 8, 2013
Community College Times
When Michael Helmick, president of Rockingham Community College (RCC) in North Carolina, was looking to develop new programs that would guarantee graduates jobs, he didn’t have to look too far: The MillerCoors brewery.
“We’re a rural community college with a major brewer in our backyard,” said Helmick, noting that the company employs 670 residents.
Couple that with the microbreweries in nearby cities and throughout the state and Helmick had an idea for a new program: brewing, distillation and fermentation technology.
Helmick knew of several community colleges with winemaking programs, but he hadn’t heard of any with brewing programs. Developing a program at RCC seemed like “a natural fit.”
There was definitely community interest in such a program. RCC recently offered a continuing education class in beer brewing. More than 100 students registered for this low-tech introduction to the brewing process. It gave RCC a chance to “test the waters,” according to Helmick.
There was industry interest, too.
“Every craft brewer we’ve talked to loves the idea,” Helmick said.
RCC formed an advisory committee and began developing curriculum with the help of brewmasters and industry experts.
The city of Eden, where the MillerCoors brewery is located, gave the college a building for a brewing facility. It will have state-of-the-art equipment and a tasting room, complete with counters made by RCC’s fine and creative woodworking division. Hops that will be used in the facility have already been planted on a quarter-acre field on the RCC campus and are being maintained by RCC students.
Such an “innovative and exciting” program is a boost to the college and the economic development of the community, said Jan Overman, RCC’s vice president for academic affairs.
Early on, RCC gauged interest among other North Carolina community colleges, as well. Four colleges—Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, Durham Technical Community College, Nash Community College and Wake Technical Community College are interested in developing, or have already started to develop, the program in their area.
RCC’s program—and a similar partnership between ABCTC and New Belgium Brewing—was recently noted in a new policy brief from the American Association of Community Colleges that discussed the benefits of two-year colleges, including their ability to serve local workforce need...

Movie set to film in Rockingham County
This week, executive director Michael Landon, Jr. begins filming a movie in locations around Rockingham County.
According to Rockingham County Manager Lance Metzler, the movie entitled “The Ultimate Life,” follows the story of a man who inherits his uncle’s fortune and after reading his diaries flashes back to how his uncle realized money isn’t the most important thing in life.
The film’s sets include Reidsville’s Annie Penn Hospital, the former Wentworth High School and Wentworth’s old and new courthouses.
“I’m interested in anything we can do to stimulate the economy whether it brings in a 500-person industry or tourism,” Metzler said.
With one of the highest unemployment rates in the state, Metzler knows the importance of stimulating the economy any way the county can. Even though the filming lasts only three days, Monday, Feb. 25 through Wednesday Feb. 27, the crews leave behind their props to help drive the economy. Tourists come visit the sets and take pictures, which helps boost sales of gas, food and shopping in the area.
Reidsville Mayor James Festerman said he looks favorably at the economic impact of the having the filming in Reidsville and feels pride to showcase Annie Penn Hospital.
“I’m delighted this group has chosen to do a film in Reidsville,” Feseterman said. “I know our citizens will show them great hospitality while they’re here. I hope this leads to future endeavors in the film industry.”
Metzler said past experiences with Rockingham County brought this film to Reidsville and Wentworth. Last year, celebrities including Owen Wilson and Zack Galifianakis came to Madison while using the town as a backdrop in the film “You are Here.”
Piedmont Triad Film Commission Director Rebecca Clark worked with Metzler on “You are Here,” and decided to scout the area to use for “The Ultimate Gift.”

Southern Finishing Expanding in Stoneville

Raleigh, N.C. – Today, Governor Pat McCrory and N.C. Commerce Secretary Sharon Decker announced that Southern Finishing Company, a furniture and cabinet component manufacturer, will expand its facility in Rockingham County. The company plans to create 11 jobs and invest more than $500,000 over the next three years in Stoneville.
"An important part of our economic growth strategy must include increasing the number products made in North Carolina," said Governor McCrory. "Our state's skilled workforce gives manufacturers a huge competitive advantage."
Southern Finishing Company, founded in 1978, specializes in prefinishing mouldings, accessories, panels, doors, kitchen and bath cabinet components, and bedrails crafted to each customer's specifications. The company partners with manufacturers such as American Woodmark, Marsh Furniture, Armstrong Cabinets, Quality Cabinets and Thomasville Furniture. Southern Finishing currently employs 10 people at its Stoneville facility.
“North Carolina has a global reputation for manufacturing top-notch furniture,” said Sharon Decker, N.C. Secretary of Commerce. “This expansion is great news for a community that was hit hard by the economic recession.”
Salaries will vary by job function, but the average annual payroll for the new jobs will be more than $280,000.
“Southern Finishing has a 32 year history in the wood industry in North Carolina, so this is a logical step for us,” said Ed Brown, President & CEO, Southern Finishing Company. “Many of our customers and suppliers have facilities in North Carolina. We currently have a manufacturing facility here. This background, the availability of affordable space and a labor force with wood industry experience in the area make this an ideal site for Southern Finishing. This move will allow us to consolidate our manufacturing base, reduce overhead, save existing manufacturing jobs and concentrate on future growth. We appreciate the opportunity that the State of North Carolina, the Town of Stoneville and Rockingham County are affording us.”
“Southern Finishing’s expansion is more good news for Stoneville and Rockingham County. We are very pleased that this well-established and respected furniture company is expanding here. It just goes to show that manufacturing is still alive and well in Rockingham County and we will do our best to help all our local manufacturers continue to be successful,” said Graham Pervier, president of the Rockingham County Partnership for Economic and Tourism Development.
The project was made possible in part by a performance-based grant from the One North Carolina Fund of up to $13,000. The grant is contingent upon proof of job creation and receipt of a local funding match. The One NC Fund provides financial assistance, through local governments, to attract business projects that will stimulate economic activity and create new jobs in the state. Companies receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment performance standards to qualify for grant funds.
Other partners that helped with this project include: the N.C. Department of Commerce, N.C. Community Colleges, Rockingham County, Rockingham County Partnership for Economic and Tourism Development and the Town of Stoneville.

GREENSBORO-HIGH POINT MSA IMPRESSIVELY RANKS #6 NATIONALLY
Top ten, six years in a row
Rockingham County, NC— Four regional economic development partners announce that, for the sixth year in a row, the Greensboro-High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) earned a Top 10 national ranking for attracting new industry among similar-sized areas (metros with populations of 200,000 to 1 million).
Site Selection/magazine, a national publication catering to executives responsible for site selection and facility planning decisions around the world, ranked the Greensboro-High Point MSA sixth in the United States in 2012.
The MSA is composed of Guilford, Randolph, and Rockingham counties.
“To achieve a top ten ranking under these conditions is extremely satisfying and validates that we are on the right track,” commented Dan Lynch, President of Greensboro EDA. “We believe our industry cluster strategy is working and gaining traction, and the investments we are making in our educational assets will ensure we have a future workforce well-equipped to compete in a knowledge-based economy.”
Bonnie Renfro, President of the Randolph County EDC, said, “We have much to be proud of in our area, and this ranking is the culmination of a strong regional push to increase our tax base and create new job opportunities.”
“Having a nationally recognized publication recognize our MSA to be one of the best in the country is a win for our entire region,” added Loren Hill, President of the High Point EDC. “Our area has been able to make significant project announcements over the past year, during very difficult economic times.”
Graham Pervier, President of the Rockingham County Partnership, said, “We are proud this recognition and look forward to continued collaboration and more announcements in 2013.”
Site Selection’s ranking was based upon the number of corporate real estate projects of $1 million or greater announced in the metro area in 2012.

Beer Brewing Degree on Tap at RCC
From The Triad Business Journal
By Matt Evans, reporter
For some students, a beer is the Friday night reward after a long, hard week of classes. But for some Rockingham Community College students, beer could soon be the class itself.
The school is expecting to expand its existing continuing education courses on home brewing into a degree-granting curriculum on brewing, distillation and fermentation technology this fall, pending approval later this year by the state’s community college system, according to President Michael Helmick. It will be the first such program in the state, and possibly in the country, Helmick said.
Helmick said the idea grew out of his interest in finding new programs for the rural college after he took over as its president two years ago. Touring the county, he learned it was home to both a MillerCoors brewery in Eden with about 550 employees and Piedmont Distillers in Madison, makers of Catdaddy Moonshine and other spirits.
“We talked to a lot of people and we didn’t know of any place else in the state with two such things going on,” he said. “We looked all over for other programs to borrow because we didn’t want to reinvent the wheel, but there wasn’t one.”
The school started out with low-tech home-brewing continuing education courses, which drew a good response. It then gathered an advisory board that includes representatives from MillerCoors as well as area microbrewers such as Red Oak Brewery in Whitsett, Foothills Brewing Co. in Winston-Salem and Natty Greene’s in Greensboro.
Those brewers confirmed there is indeed a significant need for trained employees in their industry.
“They didn’t need more master brewers; they needed more technicians,” Helmick said. “Guys who can set up this machinery and run the process properly. Anybody can do it at home five gallons at a time. The hard part is getting the same product time after time. So it really has to be grounded in science.”
The curriculum will cover topics ranging from agriculture to sanitary welding and is designed to give students career options not just in brewing and distilling but also in areas such as biofuels and food processing, Helmick said
MillerCoors is excited about the project, said Betty Grogan, the learning and development manager at the Eden brewery. The company hasn’t committed to hiring graduates at this point, but it has sent some employees to the continuing education courses.
“We’re always looking for well-trained, well-educated employees, and we’d like to work closely with RCC on building these skills, whether that prepares people to take on a role with MillerCoors or another employer,” she said. “It’s important for us to not just build our own talent base but to help with the community’s.”
Helmick said two other community colleges, Asheville-Buncombe and Blue Ridge, are also involved in developing the curriculum and also aim to start programs this fall. RCC is also negotiating an articulation agreement with Appalachian State University, which has a related four-year degree program, to ease community college student transfers.
The city of Eden is providing the school with a downtown location for the school’s new brewing equipment, which will be used by both the curriculum and continuing education classes. Helmick said down the line RCC may try bottling and selling its brews, though that would likely require some changes in the law.
Helmick said it would likely be legal for students under the age of 21 to take part in the course because of exceptions in alcohol laws for tasting in the course of a culinary or food program. But just to be safe, and also in deference to commercial partners such as MillerCoors that are very careful about underage drinking, the program will be limited to students of legal drinking age, he said.

The New NC Ramblers Keep Charlie Poole's Music Alive at the 18th Annual Charlie Poole Music Festival
Cherisse Arielle Bethea, Contributor
Charlie Poole and his band-mates, The North Carolina Ramblers, will be celebrated this year in Eden, North Carolina for the 18th time as Piedmont Folk Legacies host the 18th Annual Charlie Poole Music Festival at Governor Morehead Park this June 14th and 15th.
The festival will be a weekend celebration for the man who was a pioneer in musical history and a contributor to the foundation of what we now call country and bluegrass. Steven Stone of Vintage Guitar Magazine said it best in 2005, after the release of Charlie Poole’s three-disc box set, “While it may seem presumptuous to herald one man as ‘the roots of country music,’ Charlie Poole deserves these bragging rights as much as any single human being can.”
Charlie Poole and the North Carolina Ramblers ventured to New York City in 1925 to audition for Columbia records. They ended up recording four tracks and began their rise to fame. In 1931, Charlie Poole was scheduled to appear in a film but died of heart failure before he could make it to Hollywood, CA. But his legacy lives on in country music and the melodic sounds of the banjo and string instruments played by the NEW North Carolina Ramblers, led by Kinney Rorrer.
The New North Carolina Ramblers is an old-time string band that was formed in the late 1960s by Kinney and Doug Rorrer, nephews of Charlie Poole and Posey Rorer, who were the original North Carolina Ramblers in the 1920s. The group has featured many old-time musicians over the years but Kinney Rorrer has always remained with the group. Today, the New North Carolina Ramblers offer a variety of old time styles with a touch of down-home comedy, all while paying homage to the old-time artists, including songs from the repertoire of Charlie Poole!
Food and other vendors will be on-site for the festival, plus a Little Ramblers children’s area, and basic camping is available free for paid patrons. Tickets are $15 for the Friday concert, $15 for all day Saturday, or $25 for a weekend pass. Further information is posted at www.charlie-poole.com. This project received support from the Rockingham County Arts Council, the NC Arts Council, an agency of the NC Department of Cultural Resources and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art, as well as the Rockingham Tourism Board. For more information call 336-623-1043.
Piedmont Folk Legacies is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the musical and cultural legacies of the Piedmont region and to celebrate its influence on the development of American vernacular music, as exemplified by Charlie Poole.

New Distribution Company Locates in Eden
Eden, NC—The Rockingham County Partnership for Economic and Tourism Development is pleased to announce that A1 Wholesale Tires will open a distribution and wholesale operation in Eden. The company plans to create approximately 12 new jobs and will be located in a former Spray Cotton Mills warehouse at 413 Church Street.
“We are happy to announce more new jobs in Rockingham County,” said Graham Pervier, president of the Rockingham County Partnership. “We are especially pleased to see a new company making good use of an existing building and we look forward to A1’s success there.”
The Eden facility will initially occupy 15,000 square feet in the Spray Cotton warehouse. It will serve retail tire dealers and tire centers all over North Carolina and Virginia with particular emphasis on Central NC and Southern VA. A1 Wholesale Tires distributes both new and used tires. The company also operates a distribution center in Wendell, NC that serves the Raleigh/Durham metro area.
“We are very pleased to have been able to establish our business right in Eden and to have found excellent warehouse space in the Spray Cotton Mills building. We are excited about the possibilities of providing jobs and giving back in our home community,” said Jim Koffarnus, a partner in A1 Wholesale Tires. “As our business grows, we hope to be able to create more jobs in the future.”
“The new Eden facility gives us the ability to warehouse thousands of popular sizes of new and used tires in a single, conveniently and centrally located distribution center. That in turn will provide regional tire dealers easy, convenient, and cost effective access to product,” Koffarnus added.
A1 Wholesale Tires wishes to thank the Rockingham County Partnership for Economic and Tourism Development, The City of Eden, and Mark Bishopric with Spray Cotton Mills for their assistance in locating this facility in Rockingham County.

DRBA Mayo River Float
Dan River Basin Association's First Saturday Outing:
April 6, 2013
Six-mile float on the Mayo River from Anglin Mill to NC 770 near Stoneville, NC.
Meeting at 10:00 a. m. at Old Anglin Mill Road (GPS 36.52976, -79.98952), downstream from Anglin Mill Bridge, the group will float past portions of the Mayo River State Park.
"Beginning paddlers are invited to launch below Mayo Beach for a fairly easy float through mostly Class 1 waters," says Kirkpatrick. "There's one tricky rapid just below the put-in that can be avoided by putting in downstream from it."
Expert paddlers with a yen for more thrills will have the option of running the famous "Boiling Hole" and the "S-turn" (alias "Blender") before proceeding with the rest of the trip.
Otherwise the most excitement comes from navigating small rapids through several 1000-year-old fish weirs created in the river by Native Americans and used by local residents until about 1900.
Participants in the outing are asked to bring boat, life jacket, lunch and water, to dress in layers of wool or artificial (quick-drying) fabric, and to sign a waiver. Expect the water to be cool at this time of year, and be prepared to get wet.
To reach the put-in, from US 220 north of Stoneville, exit onto Smith Road (SR 1360) and turn west. Go four miles to a T-intersection with Anglin Mill Road (SR 1358). Turn left on Anglin Mill Road and travel about a half-mile to within less than a mile of the Anglin Mill Bridge over the Mayo. Turn left onto unpaved Old Anglin Mill Road (SR 1385). Go one-half mile to a T-intersection with Mayo Beach Road (SR 1359).
For more information about the outing, contact Trip Coordinator Wayne Kirkpatrick
wynbtyk@embarqmail.com or 540-570-3511.
Outings and meetings of the Dan River Basin Association are open to the public without charge.

Duke Energy Dan River station economic boon to Rockingham
EDEN — Things are humming nicely at Duke Energy’s Dan River Combined Cycle Station.
The new power plant is complete, and officials with Duke Energy celebrated with a ribbon-cutting Wednesday.
The state-of-the-art station can generate 620 megawatts of electricity and is capable of powering nearly half a million homes. The $720 million plant replaces the Dan River Steam Station, which opened in 1949 and closed in April 2012.
Officials with Duke Energy flipped the “on” switch on the station on Dec. 10.
Rockingham County leaders see the plant as a great value to the community. And they want to do more business with Duke Energy.
“Rockingham County has plenty of water and plenty of land,” said Keith Mabe, chairman of the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners.
Building the station was an economic boon to Rockingham County — employing as many as 650 people. During construction, workers:
• Brought in more than 265,000 cubic yards of soil.
• Poured nearly 21,000 cubic yards of concrete.
• Laid more than 250 miles of electrical cable.
• Worked with more than 2,900 tons of struc- tural steel.
• Laid more than 5 miles of underground pipe, including a 16-inch pipeline that supplies gas to the site.
Bringing the Dan River station online is part of Duke Energy’s effort to replace coal plants with stations that use natural gas.
The new plant uses combustion and steam turbines to convert the natural gas to electricity. That type of fuel burns cleaner, which results in decreased emissions and higher efficiency.
Another benefit? Flexibility.
It can go from “cold shutdown” — or “off” — to full capacity in about four hours. The old steam station needed nearly 12 hours to reach full capacity.
The new station also reduces the water it draws from the Dan River and minimizes heated water discharge.
“The Dan River plant represents the overall plans of Duke Energy to invest in our communities and install new state-of-the-art power generation that will provide safe, reliable and increasingly clean energy for North Carolina,” said Paul Newton, president of Duke Energy’s utility operations in North Carolina. Local Music Attractions Featured in New NC Music Guide
Rockingham County, NC--The Rockingham County Tourism Development Authority is pleased to announce that two local attractions are featured in a new guidebook highlighting Western North Carolina’s legendary music traditions. Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina: A Guide to Music Sites, Artists, and Traditions of the Mountains and Foothills is a 256-page book that includes more than 140 color illustrations, profiles of prominent musicians and unique sidebars. Two Eden attractions are featured in the book: banjo legend Charlie Poole and the Charlie Poole Music Festival and The Barn, a bluegrass and gospel music performance venue.
Western North Carolina has a national reputation as a music-rich region and its traditions of old-time string band music, ballad singing and bluegrass are internationally renowned — with musicians from the region shaping many forms of American music. Today, bands like the Steep Canyon Rangers, Avett Brothers and the Kruger Brothers are learning these traditions and creating new forms of roots music.
In this lively guidebook, noted folklorist Fred C. Fussell puts readers on the trail to discover the many sites in western North Carolina where this unique musical legacy thrives. Organized by region and county, Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina welcomes readers into the rich worlds of bluegrass, old-time, gospel, and string band music, as well as clogging, flatfooting, and other forms of traditional dance.
In fact, western North Carolina is the heart of unique regional music-making with many distinctions in traditional music that make it one of the most celebrated places for old-time music-making. No other state has had more influence on the development of the banjo in America. Musicians from the western piedmont and mountain region, including Earl Scruggs, Charlie Poole and Snuffy Jenkins, among many, are recognized as the creators and popularizers of modern banjo styles. The Earl Scruggs Center in Shelby and the Charlie Poole Festival in Eden celebrate the banjo and the achievements of these extraordinary musicians every year.
“While our community is firmly planted in the North Carolina Piedmont, our inclusion in this important guide to Blue Ridge music venues and historic sites is an indication of the tremendous importance of Charlie Poole to the development of American music,” said Louise Price, director of the Charlie Poole Music Festival.
“We are proud that these two Rockingham County music attractions are featured on this new Blue Ridge Music Trail and in the book,” said Robin Yount, vice president of tourism. “The historical significance of Charlie Poole and the annual festival celebrating his legacy have attracted many visitors to our community over the years. And the success that The Barn is now having in drawing more old-time musicians and traditional dance fans to our county just shows the positive impact that our musical roots have on our tourism industry.”
The Rockingham County section of Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina also features a sidebar story about Kinney Rorrer, a local banjo player. Rorrer taught history for 32 years at Danville Community College in Danville, Virginia, before retiring in 2006. He is the author of Ramblin’ Blues: The Life and Songs of Charlie Poole. Rorrer is a descendant of Charlie Poole and also plays the banjo with a group called the New North Carolina Ramblers, named in tribute to the acclaimed North Carolina Ramblers.
Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina is a project of the North Carolina Arts Council and its partner, the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area. The book features a CD with more than 20 songs by musicians profiled in the book, historic recordings of the region's most influential musicians spanning nine decades—now available for the first time--and songs based on true stories of love, crime, and tragedy set in the North Carolina mountains.
Blue Ridge Music Trails of North Carolina is available for purchase for $20 at www.uncpress.unc.edu.
About Charlie Poole
Charlie Poole lived and worked in Eden where he had his humble beginnings. It was here that he assembled his famed group, the North Carolina Ramblers, which helped launch his international career as a Columbia Records recording artist during the 1920s and 1930s. Poole and the Ramblers were one of the most popular bands of the 1920s and they had a great impact on the development of bluegrass music and modern country music. Poole is largely responsible for popularizing the banjo. The 2005-released three-CD box set of Poole’s music, “You Ain’t Talkin’ to Me,” received three GRAMMY nominations in 2006. Each June the local community celebrates Poole’s contribution to the music industry with the Charlie Poole Music Festival. The 2013 Charlie Poole Music Festival will take place June 14-15 in Eden. For more information, visit www.charlie-poole.com.
About The Barn
The Barn is a traditional old-time music and dance hall that was created by Jerry and Debbie Wilson. Literally a wooden barn, it is located on Gant Road near Eden and attracts people of all ages who gather to see and hear bluegrass and gospel bands. The Barn hosts formal performances as well as local regulars every Tuesday night and the second and fourth Saturdays of each month beginning at 7:00 p.m. It also features a small dance floor where patrons come out to two-step, waltz and flat foot. In Rockingham County, the Sun is a Crop
From the News & Record
by Brad Kesler
PELHAM — The first thing that gets your attention is the blue — row after row of polycrystalline panels sitting atop aluminum racking gleaming in the sunlight.
From a distance, the fenced-in area could be mistaken for a body of water.
This is a farm. Its crop is the sun.
The solar farm, which is run by Chapel Hill-based Strata Solar, sits on roughly 40 acres. More than 26,000 solar panels generate 5 megawatts of AC power.
This power, enough to serve 750 houses, is sold to Duke Energy...

Albaad and Amcor to Expand
Rockingham County, NC—The Rockingham County Partnership for Economic and Tourism Development is pleased to announce that two local companies plan to expand.
Albaad, USA plans to expand its manufacturing operation in Reidsville by investing $1.3 million in new machinery and equipment by the end of 2013. The company, which located its US operation in the Reidsville Industrial Park in 2004, is a world leader in wet wipes manufacturing. Albaad currently employs 182 people in Rockingham County.
Amcor Tobacco Packaging Americas, Inc. also plans to expand its Reidsville plant by investing $9.5 million in machinery and equipment and creating 30 new jobs by the end of this year. Amcor is a worldwide leader in tobacco packaging. Its local manufacturing operation is also located in the Reidsville Industrial Park and it currently employs 105 people.
“Having two of our existing industries plan expansions is certainly great news for Rockingham County. Both Albaad and Amcor have been good corporate citizens here for the last seven to eight years and we are happy to support their growth,” said Graham Pervier, president of the Rockingham County Partnership for Economic and Tourism Development.
“Albaad and Amcor were our first two industries to locate in the Reidsville Industrial Park, so I am particularly pleased to see the continued reinvestment in their facilities. Their continued success in Reidsville is truly something to celebrate,” said Michael Pearce, city manager of Reidsville. “The incentive packages that were agreed on by the County Commissioners and City Council this week are working testimony of our local governments working together to help our industries grow.”
“Albaad USA is honored to be a premier employer in Rockingham County and to provide employment and career opportunities to our local citizens. We appreciate the supportive partnerships within the community and the recognition for our continued investment into Reidsville and Rockingham County,” said Ron Gburek, chief executive officer of Albaad USA. “We are extremely pleased to be considered for this financial incentive package. Our presence within Reidsville, and Rockingham County, and our partnership with local government energizes citizen confidence in job growth and boosts the economy on many levels.”
The Rockingham County Board of Commissioners and the Reidsville City Council each approved local incentive packages this week to help make both these industry expansions possible. Posted By: Reidsville Downtown |

Rockingham County is ready for you to discover its fun side.
Not just fun. FUN.
The county recently launched a $5,000 billboard campaign showing why Rockingham County is a fun place to visit, live and work.
“We’re trying to keep it low budget and high impact,” said Adam Lindsay, the county’s director of strategic management.
The ads are popping up on billboards in the county, in Greensboro and near the Virginia border.
“We want to grab people’s attention and get them familiar with Rockingham County,” said county spokeswoman Mable Scott.
The billboards include images of a girl in a kayak on a river, a couple eating ice cream at a festival, a father and son fishing and a man biking outdoors.
The word “FUN” appears on all the billboards, as does “Search: Rockingham County, NC.”
An electronic sign near the corner of Battleground Avenue and Cotswold Avenue in Greensboro has all four images mixed with other ads.
The simplicity of the signs was intended.
“Consider the medium,” Lindsay said. “You’re driving by 50 miles per hour on the highway. We’re not going to be able to give out a lot of information.
“We wanted to give them something easy to remember. It is an intent to get them to our website.”
The county’s website is undergoing a redesign, including a “FUN” page. Links will include the county’s tourism website, a calendar and a visitor’s guide.
Links to the county’s social media — Twitter, Facebook, Youtube and Flickr — are visible on the home page.
The community can contribute to the site as well.
Scott said people can submit photos taken in the county and county workers will post them on the site — with credit given to the person who submits them.
“We want to get the citizens involved,” Scott said.
The county is waiting to see the reaction from its advertising campaign before deciding on its next step.
“I think Rockingham County is a sleeping giant and one of the best-kept secrets in North Carolina,” Scott said.

Dinner & History
Looking for a bite to eat? Looking for something interesting to do after work? Do trains intrigue you? If you answered yes, join us at the Museum and Archives of Rockingham County (MARC) for dinner and history Thursday, May 30th from 6-8pm, when County Historian, Bob Carter presents “The History of Railroads in Rockingham County.”
The rails were laid and the wheels of the iron horse rolled toward new horizons. Railroad lines connected Rockingham County goods to a larger market. They connected people to others in the county and beyond. It wasn’t until the Piedmont Railroad was built in 1862-1864 that trains arrived in Rockingham County. When they did, it made a major impact.
Admission to the program is $12.50 for adults, $10 for seniors and students. Entrance to the museum is included in the program price. Order your tickets and choose your box dinner at the MARC or on-line at www.themarconline.org. Tickets go on sale May 10th.Posted By: Reidsville Downtown |

Triad-based ag-bio research may revolutionize cattle, crop efficiency
From The Business Journal
May 31, 2013 print edition
-by Matt Evans, reporter
It’s a more formal dining process than most cows are used to — having to access the food through a device known as a “calan gate” that limits her to a single feed bin of her own.
But she’s getting all the food she wants and in the process making what could turn out to be a valuable contribution to the state’s biotechnology industry.
That’s because these cows are located at the Upper Piedmont Research Station, one of 19 such research stations scattered across the state under the auspices of the N.C. Department of Agriculture and managed by N.C. A&T State University and N.C. State.
Those stations aren’t just there to do strictly agricultural research in areas such as irrigation methods and fertilizer applications. They are also delving into the world of biotechnology, where the understanding and manipulation of cells, genes and proteins have the potential to change how the state’s single-most dominant industry functions.
“Many people don’t realize it, but agriculture is the No. 1 economic engine in North Carolina,” generating $70 billion of activity annually and employing more than 17 percent of the state’s work force, says William Randle, dean of the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at N.C. A&T.
“The experimental station network has been developed to be on the front edge of making agriculture competitive by opening up new opportunities through the use of new technologies,” Randle says.
Cow efficiency?
Take the feed-related research going on at the Upper Piedmont Station in Reidsville, north of Greensboro, for example. Cattle eating through the calan gates are taking part in a research project originated by an animal science researcher at N.C. State, according to Joe French, the station’s superintendent.
The gates are used so that each individual heifer is eating from an isolated supply of food, allowing researchers to know exactly how much each consumes. Comparing that volume to the amount of weight the cow gains over a set period of time reveals her particular “efficiency.” The more efficiency, the more weight she’ll gain from a smaller (and therefore less expensive) amount of food.
Once enough data is collected, scientists will begin comparing the genetic makeup of the most efficient cattle to the least efficient, hopefully eventually isolating which genes account for the differences.
The goal is to develop a DNA test for feed efficiency, French says, similar to DNA tests that already exist that can help farmers predict other beneficial traits such as how much marbling to expect in a particular cut of meat from a particular cow. Those findings can help cattle farmers make breeding and selection plans.
Farmers have long been able to learn the efficiency of a herd over time, but biotechnology has the potential to dramatically alter that learning process, French says.
“If and when it happens, and remember it’s still at the research level, it would revolutionize the beef cattle industry,” French says. “Theoretically, it would give you the ability from the day a calf is born to take a DNA sample and decide if it stays in the gene pool, goes to the feedlot or becomes veal. You’ll be able to make long-term management decisions that you’d have no other way to make for years now.”
Crop commercialization
Crop farmers are also benefiting from biotech research taking place with the network of research stations, says Paul Ulanch, executive director of the Biotechnology Crop Commercialization Center, part of the agricultural biotechnology initiative run by the N.C. Biotech Center.
The statewide spread of the research locations is key to biotechnology crop study, Ulanch says. North Carolina’s mountains-to-the-sea topography offers one of the most diverse sets of soil conditions in the country. Having research operations in so many places helps researchers and corporations with crop-related products, learn how those conditions will affect performance.
For example, Ulanch says research is taking place now into how the cereal crop sorghum could be effectively planted in various parts of the state in fields that otherwise are unused for part of the year. North Carolina has soil conditions that are similar to parts of states like Texas and Kansas where sorghum is grown, but the humid conditions here have limited the crop’s value to the state.
“The idea here is to work with scientists at universities to help them with resources to speed up the breeding process to identify new variants not yet in commercial existence that would perform better in the North Carolina climate compared to Texas,” Ulanch says.
Corporate connections
He says four universities including N.C. State, Virginia Tech, Clemson and the University of South Carolina are involved in that research, along with corporate partners such as Texas-based Richardson Seeds and Chromatin Inc. in Illinois.
Like other technologies developed by university researchers, corporate partners would be able to negotiate a license to use the scientific advances to get them from test field into the commercial market.
Gwyn Riddick, vice president of Agricultural Biotechnology at the Biotech Center and also the former director of the Center’s Piedmont Triad office, says that while he hasn’t seen an economic impact report related to the research station network’s biotech work, he sees its value frequently.
“As Paul (Ulanch of BCCC) and I go out and talk to people around the world who have a technology or a company that they want to bring to North Carolina, we can tell them we have this asset that they really value because through one system, they can test a seed or a plant in multiple geographies and climate zones,” Riddick says. “That adds a lot of value to being here.

Local Company, Kalo Foods, Featured on TV
From WFMY, News 2
"Made in the Triad"
A new bakery in Rockingham County is creating delicious, gluten free treats.
Kalo Foods, LLC in Stokesdale makes products like cupcakes, cookies, brownies, bread, pizza crust and do-it-yourself pancake and waffle mixes. The business opened in February and it already has dozens of clients across North Carolina, Virginia and Washington DC.
President, Michael Cusato, came up with the idea to open the business because his wife has Celiac Disease. Cusato said, "I tried a number of the foods my wife had to eat that were gluten-free. Not a lot of taste, not a lot of texture." So he and some family members started creating new recipes without wheat.
The bakery uses many traditional ingredients such as sugar, cocoa and brown sugar but white flour is not used. Instead, tapioca and rice flour are the common substitutes.
Head baker Judy Doan, a professional baker for more than 20 years, exclaims, "It's wonderful. I cannot taste the difference!"
Perhaps Kalo is a fitting name for the company. "Kalo" means "good" in Greek. The company is doing good by hiring veterans. Cusato himself is a service disabled veteran.
